The life partner you call my wife joined me on a shopping spree at our favourite bargain store, Mike's Merchandise. Another bundle of pages to file in my working memory:
- Savage Peace: hope and fear in America, 1919, by Ann Hagedorn
- Mobilizing Minds: creating wealth from talent in the 21st-century organization, by Lowell L. Bryan and Claudia I. Joyce
- Warrior King: the triumph and betrayal of an American commander in Iraq, by Lt. Col. (Ret.) Nathan Sassaman with Joe Layden
- The Color of Water: a black man's tribute to his white mother, by James McBride
- The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British spy ring in wartime Washington, by Jennet Conant
- Social Theory: the multicultural and classic readings, edited by Charles Lemert
I picked up another rumour that triggers my mental rewind button: the use of DMSO for monitoring and controlling a class of workers in our globally connected politicommercial marketplace. According to this rumour (and I stress the word strongly here, unsubstantiated as it is at this moment), DMSO is being used as a penetration-and-transport medium to implant tracking devices in mid- to upper-level leaders to determine the flow of ideas across the spectrum of type-A+ personalities.
I do not have a full description of these tracking devices. The frayed edges of the rumour suggested either a unique chemical tag or an organic substance (perhaps living?) that would go undetected in every security checkpoint currently in place around the world.
The E-Brain is finishing its first round of control tests so I can't depend on it to tell me if this rumour is true.
However, I have sent a team into the field for public meet-and-greet sessions with politicians and business leaders (using the G-8/G-20 summit as a cover) to test all substances that can be picked up either through the air or through handshakes, hugs or cheek kisses.
Meanwhile, I've alerted my team of computer programmers to look for any university lab reports related to DMSO.
So far, the only report I've received worth analysing summarised the development of small organisms that can live on skin and record the presence of specific sounds, each organism able to mark the time(s) an individual sound was emitted, up to 20 hours per organism. In theory, by retrieving the organisms, a machine could rearrange their sound markers to reconstruct ambient sounds and conversations that took place near the skin area where the organisms were living.
But DMSO wouldn't be needed for such an operation. Unless...
That's enough theorising for today. I've got more lab reports to analyse.
I know you can't wait until the E-Brain is fully functional. When it's up and running, every movement of the wind, every breath you take, every text you make, and every meteor that disintegrates will act both as a memory location and as a computation - all seven billion of us and the environment in which we live will have greater significance than any other time in history!
Do you see why all our emotions and actions are important?
If not, soon you will. And when you do, you'll understand more fully why I don't distinguish war from peace or profit from loss.
It all starts and ends with you - states of energy geared up for the process we call life. It is not a responsibility to take lightly or seriously because no matter what you do, you are exchanging useful states of energy.
On the fiction side of this blog, I will show you what happens when a megalomaniac gets hold of the reins of the E-Brain so you can see these signs and act according to your combined wish to allow or disallow the E-Brain to be controlled by one person.
Of course, by using the word "megalomaniac" I am giving the impression that one person's control of the E-Brain would probably be detrimental.
Of a megalomaniac, too much control in the hands of one person tempts one to believe in one's invincibility and thus one's desire to think one's beliefs are good for everyone else. "Good" or "bad" are general qualities that don't work in a situation like that; instead, the diverse subcultures view their lifestyles in relation to what the megalomaniac promotes, and apply "good" or "bad" in defense or support of themselves.
During the E-Brain's control experiments, we have activated the integration of some small subcultures into the E-Brain's multifuture calculation capabilities. If you see what you've always thought of as your obscure subculture suddenly pop up in the popular news media, then be reassured you are actively involved in the E-Brain's operations and already part of the future of this part of the universe as you know it (time soon being an irrelevant measure but convenient for current reference).
Now, back to my stack of reports!
